Vapeboss – Public health observer, Dr. Tri Budhi Baskara, warned of the dangers of misusing electronic cigarettes or vapes, which can cause e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI). He stated that EVALI is caused by the misuse of devices or liquids.

"EVALI is still caused by the Vitamin E ointment mixed into vape liquid. This is considered misuse, as no vape liquid base uses ointment or oil," he said.

According to Tri Budhi, EVALI can occur due to contamination or mixing of non-standard ingredients into the liquid, which in this case can be called adulterated vape liquid. In America, from around 2019 to 2020, there was widespread misuse of vape liquid mixed with marijuana. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, 17 cases of lung injury were recorded throughout June 2023.

"The cases in the USA involved cannabis or synthetic marijuana oil mixed into vape liquid, which caused EVALI," he said.

Additionally, findings by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also stated that 84% of EVALI patients used vapes containing Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is typically found in cannabis or marijuana plants.

"These cases appear to occur in people who modify their vape devices or use modified liquids from the black market. This is especially true for vape products containing THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)," said the researcher.

Misuse and standardization are key terms in EVALI cases. Tri Budhi advised the government to formulate clear regulations and sanctions, but not those that contain or aim to prohibit vapes. For him, prohibition will only lead to a proliferation of difficult-to-monitor and non-standardized black markets.
