In recent years, electronic cigarettes, more commonly known as vapes, have become popular among the public. This is because these devices are an alternative to conventional cigarettes and are claimed to be lower risk. However, some countries have implemented rules that prohibit the use of vapes with varying sanctions.
For example, neighboring countries that prohibit vapes include Singapore and Thailand. If you vapers intend to visit these countries, it is best to reconsider bringing your vape devices.
In Singapore, vapes are considered contraband and cannot be brought into the country. If caught buying, possessing, or using a vape, a fine of up to 2,000 Singapore dollars, or about 22 million rupiah, will be imposed.
Meanwhile, in Thailand, the use of electronic cigarettes has been banned since 2014. If found using a vape, a fine of up to 30,000 baht, or about 13 million rupiah, will be imposed, and even imprisonment.
List of Foreign Countries That Restrict Vape Use
In addition to Singapore and Thailand, here are some countries in the world that prohibit or restrict vape use, such as:
1. Taiwan
Tourists are not allowed to bring vapes or vape liquids into Taiwan at all. This is because the country has completely banned the use of vapes, effective from 2023.
However, tourists who wish to make a short stop can declare this to customs and store the products so that they can be collected upon departure.
2. Hong Kong
Hong Kong banned the sale of vape products in April 2022, and although it is still legal to possess and use them, tourists are not allowed to bring their vape devices.
3. India
Since 2019, vapes and related products have been banned in India. Tourists are also not allowed to bring vape devices and similar items because the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India prohibits vapes from being carried on planes or through airports.
4. Japan
Nicotine vape products and similar items can be brought into Japan, but they are regulated by the state. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, customs tolerates quantities up to 120ml. For possession of quantities exceeding this, a medical certificate is required.
Vape devices, cartridges, and atomizers are treated as medical devices, with the condition that only one device or two (spares) can pass through customs.
5. Mexico
In this country, the sale of electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices has been prohibited since 2022. This regulation was established after their import was banned in October 2021. This means that vapes brought into Mexico are considered illegal items.
Mexico also implements the strictest anti-tobacco laws in the world. Under these laws, smoking is prohibited in all public places, including hotels, beaches, and parks. Violators can be fined up to 550 USD or about 8 million rupiah.
6. Qatar
Since 2014, Qatar has banned all forms related to vaping. Tourists are also not allowed to bring vapes into the country. These regulations were also tightened when Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
