Vapeboss – Cybercrime, or threats in the digital world, are now rampant. For example, Doxing and Phishing often intimidate certain groups of people and are frequently complained about by many parties. The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) stated that from 2019 to 2020, many journalists were intimidated online, and even death threats occurred repeatedly in several regions.
"The digital space, with all its advantages and benefits, is not free from the risk of crime. Cybercrimes such as phishing, doxing, or scams can target anyone, anytime," said Mochamad Ismanu Roziqi, Deputy Chairman of the Tulungagung Regency Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Volunteer, quoted from his statement on Saturday, June 10, 2023.
Roziqi conveyed this while speaking as a resource person in a discussion organized by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemkominfo) along with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Tulungagung Regency. This event was held as a chip-in at the village clean-up event in Gesikan Village Hall, Pakel District, Tulungagung Regency, East Java.
In addition to Roziqi, the offline discussion titled 'Getting to Know Phishing and Doxing, New Crimes in the Digital Space' also featured two other resource persons: Deny Yudiantoro, a lecturer at Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University Tulungagung (UIN SATU), and IT consultant Ary Sunaryo, with Mohammad Noviyanto as moderator.
Roziqi added that to minimize doxing and phishing, the public needs to understand these new cybercrimes. "An important strategy to avoid doxing, phishing, or scam attacks, which are now rampant in the digital space, is to lock the entry points," said Roziqi.
Another anticipatory measure, Roziqi continued, is not to carelessly click on numerous alluring offers and misleading information aggressively spread by digital criminals. Furthermore, to keep personal data and social media accounts secure, don't be lazy to change your PIN and create strong passwords for personal accounts.
In fact, he added, it's even better with two-factor authentication. "Don't just combine complex numbers and letters. If necessary, complete it with face scanning," Roziqi advised.
From a digital security perspective, Ary Sunaryo said that cybercriminals often attack with malicious viruses like malware that damage and snoop on personal data. Therefore, he shared useful safety tips.
"Make it a habit to continuously update the antivirus on all our digital devices. Just download and install it as a deterrent against personal data theft attacks. Also, don't be reckless using public Wi-Fi. In many cases, that is also an entry point for phishing attacks," Ary advised.
Meanwhile, Deny Yudiantoro reminded that phishing and doxing are increasingly targeting digital users everywhere. Through baiting techniques, hackers trick users into unknowingly obtaining important data via the internet.
"Don't be fooled by dazzling free gifts, and anything that feels unfamiliar. They usually manipulate official links with strange and long names. If you've already clicked, don't fill in your data, just ignore it. Don't follow their demands if that's a condition for receiving hundreds of millions in prizes. That's a phishing modus operandi," Deny concluded.
