Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you're always healthy, have a smooth flow of sustenance, and all your activities are made easy!

A study titled "Electronic Cigarettes Alter Nasal Mucosal Immune Response to Live-Attenuated Influenza Virus (LAIV)," aims to determine the relationship between vaping, smoking, and the possibility of contracting COVID-19.

"There are a lot of questions in the field as to whether e-cigarette use and smoking are beneficial or detrimental or problematic in relation to COVID, and we really don't have good answers yet," said lead author Meghan Rebuli, an assistant professor in the UNC Department of Pediatrics, in an interview quoted by The News and Observer.

Researchers compared nasal epithelial lining fluid from smokers, non-smokers, and vapers, and found that smokers and vapers showed more changes in their respiratory cell immune genes that fight viruses than non-smokers. Additionally, smokers and vapers appeared to have suppressed antibody levels.

“Our results indicate that e-cigarette use alters LAIV-induced immune responses in the nose, including gene expression, cytokine and chemokine release, and LAIV-specific IgA levels. Together, these data suggest that e-cigarette use induces changes in the nasal mucosa consistent with a potential alteration of respiratory antiviral host defense function.

However, researchers failed to determine whether vaping participants were previous smokers (as is the case for most vapers) or even dual users. Therefore, based on findings from previous research, many harm reduction experts would argue that the negative responses could be due to the effects of past smoking.

Ex-Smoker COPD Patients Who Switched to E-cigarettes Experience Health Improvements

Meanwhile, following up on findings published two years ago, a recent study led by award-winning and renowned expert in tobacco harm reduction, Prof. Riccardo Polosa, confirmed that smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who switched to vaping reported improved respiratory symptoms, compared to those who continued to smoke.

In the study titled "Health effects in COPD smokers who switch to electronic cigarettes: a 3-year retrospective-prospective follow-up," this previous research involved 44 patients over three years. The participants were divided into two groups: those who switched from smoking to vaping and those who continued to smoke. The collected data showed that COPD patients who switched to vaping reported improved respiratory symptoms, while those who continued to smoke experienced no changes.

Following up with the same COPD patients two years later, the latest study, "COPD smokers who switch to electronic cigarettes: health outcomes at 5 years follow-up," found that the vaping group experienced an approximately 50% decrease in flare-ups and significant improvements in their cardio-respiratory health, as well as increased exercise capacity and quality of life.
