Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you're always healthy, your sustenance is smooth, and all your activities are made easy!!

Consistent with countless other studies, this study found that when used as a substitute for regular cigarettes, vaping does reduce exposure to a key carcinogen (NNAL). “We found that e-cigarettes that deliver nicotine levels comparable to traditional combustible cigarettes help reduce smoking and exposure to harmful carcinogens,” said Jonathan Foulds, a researcher at the Penn State Cancer Institute and a professor of public health sciences and psychiatry and behavioral health.

“This study demonstrates that when smokers interested in reduction are provided with e-cigarettes with cigarette-like nicotine delivery, they are more likely to achieve significant reductions in tobacco-related toxins, such as lower exhaled carbon monoxide levels.”

The study consisted of a randomized controlled trial of 520 participants who smoked more than nine cigarettes a day, were not currently using vaping products and were interested in reducing smoking but not quitting. Participants were given e-cigarettes filled with 0, 8 or 36 milligrams per milliliter of liquid nicotine, or plastic tubes (shaped like cigarettes) containing no nicotine or aerosol, and were provided with smoking reduction guidelines.

Researchers tested participants' urine for NNAL (4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol) at weeks 0, 4, 12 and 24. They found that participants who used e-cigarettes filled with cigarette-like levels of liquid nicotine had significantly lower levels of the carcinogen at week 24 compared to baseline and compared to levels observed in the non-smoking control condition.

Vapes with poor nicotine delivery profiles may be less effective

Lead author of the study, Caroline Cobb, who is a professor of psychology at VCU, said the research is important for two reasons. “First, many e-cigarettes have poor nicotine delivery profiles, and our results suggest that such products may be less effective in helping smokers change their behavior and toxin exposure.”

“Second, previous randomized controlled trials examining whether e-cigarettes help smokers change their smoking behavior and toxin exposure have used e-cigarettes with low or unknown nicotine delivery profiles,” Cobb added. “Our study highlights the importance of characterizing the nicotine delivery profiles of e-cigarettes before conducting randomized controlled trials. This work also has other important strengths compared to previous research, including sample size, intervention duration, multiple measures of toxin exposure, and control conditions.
