Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? I hope you are always healthy, your sustenance is abundant, and all your activities are made easy!!
On this occasion, we will briefly discuss a study that is currently analyzing whether e-cigarette use among adolescent smokers in the US is associated with subsequent smoking abstinence, and contrary to countless previous peer-reviewed studies, which claimed to find no such association.
The research, titled "Association between e-cigarette use initiated after smoking and smoking abstinence: a cross-sectional study of established adolescent smokers in the US," aimed to examine the relationship between the initiation of e-cigarette use as a means to quit smoking, and initiated after smoking and smoking abstinence among established US adolescent smokers.
Countless other studies have found that quit rates tend to be higher in people who use nicotine-containing e-cigarettes than conventional NRT. The data was taken from the 2015-2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), a nationally representative US survey of middle and high school students. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between ever e-cigarette use and 30-day abstinence from smoking, and the sample consisted of ever smokers with or without a history of e-cigarette use after starting to smoke.
The researchers said they found no association between e-cigarette use and subsequent smoking abstinence among adolescents who were established smokers. Furthermore, the researchers added, there was some evidence of an inverse relationship between experimental and current e-cigarette users.
Research suggests otherwise
However, a recent review aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes as a cessation tool, compared to traditional NRT, confirmed that quit rates tend to be higher in people who use nicotine-containing e-cigarettes.
The Cochrane Review, titled "Electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation," studied research to evaluate the effects and safety of using electronic cigarettes (EC) to help people who smoke achieve long-term smoking abstinence.
The researchers looked through randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and randomized crossover trials where smokers were divided into two groups (EC condition or control). Studies (50 completed studies, representing 12,430 participants) included in the review, had to report abstinence from cigarettes at six months or more and/or data on adverse effects (AEs) or other safety markers at one week or more.
In line with previous findings, the researchers concluded that ECs lead to more successful quit attempts. "There is moderate certainty evidence that ECs with nicotine increase quit rates compared to ECs without nicotine and compared to NRT. Evidence comparing nicotine ECs with usual care/no treatment also shows benefits, but is less certain."
