Hello Bigboss! How are you today? I hope you are always healthy, your sustenance is smooth, and all your activities are made easy!
A study titled, "A Descriptive Analysis of the Transition from Smoking to Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) Use: A Daily Diary Investigation," concluded that quitting through vaping is rarely immediate. "The transition from smoking to ENDS use may involve a prolonged period of dual use, which is likely to be dynamic and potentially sustained over several months."
However, commenting on the claims made by the study, co-director of the Aotearoa Vapers Community Advocacy (AVCA) Nancy Loucas, highlighted that the researchers failed to acknowledge an important detail. "The process of kicking cigarettes, through vaping, is never easy and varies from smoker to smoker. However, what the University of Otago researchers failed to acknowledge is that despite this, vaping remains the most effective quitting tool in the world. Moreover, ongoing personal support is key," she said.
She added that between 2016 and 2018, AVCA designed and ran its own Vape It Forward (VIP) program, which showed an 83% quit rate. "VIF is a holistic mentoring program for adults who have tried to quit smoking using conventional methods. It proves that comprehensive and all-round support without time limits works. There is no reason to shame someone who uses both cigarettes and vapes before fully transitioning. That's not a failure. That's part of the journey," she said.
Success of quitting smoking through ENDS
Another recent study looked at whether smokers who tried to quit through vaping reported the same quit rates as those using generally recommended smoking cessation aids. The study, titled, "Electronic cigarettes in smoking cessation treatment by tobacco counselors in Flanders: E-cigarette users show similar if not higher quit rates as those using commonly recommended smoking cessation aids," examined the smoking cessation success of smokers trying to quit through vaping.
Participants were recruited by tobacco counselors and underwent smoking cessation treatment (in groups) for 2 months. Participants were followed for 7 months after the quit date, and were asked to complete questionnaires and submit eCO measurements. "One third of all participants (nā=ā244) achieved 7-month smoking abstinence after the quit date, with e-cigarette users having a higher likelihood of quitting smoking at the last session compared to NRT users," the researchers reported.
In line with previous findings, the researchers found that vapes may be more effective than other NRTs in helping smokers quit. "People who smoke and opt for electronic cigarettes in the context of smoking cessation treatment by tobacco counselors show similar if not higher smoking cessation rates compared to those who opt for evidence-based smoking cessation aids (or none at all)," they concluded.
