Vapeboss – A study titled, "Associations between the implementation of tobacco control policies and adolescent vaping in 44 low-, middle-, and high-income countries," gathered data from 51,960 adolescents aged between 13 and 15 from low- and middle-income, upper-middle-income, and high-income countries who participated in the World Health Organization's Global Youth Tobacco Survey.

The research team found that about 1 in 12, or 8.6%, of adolescents reported vaping in the past 30 days, while 1 in 60, or 1.7%, said they vaped for more than 10 days in the last month. These figures suggest that the majority of adolescents who vape do so experimentally and do not use the product regularly. Additionally, countries with higher tobacco taxes tended to have higher rates of adolescent vaping.

Vape's potential for smoking cessation

Meanwhile, an article published in the American Journal of Public Health highlighted that the potential for smoking cessation through e-cigarettes is largely overshadowed by media coverage of the potential risks posed by vaping to adolescents.

Kenneth Warner, Dean Emeritus and Avedis Donabedian Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and 14 past presidents of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco co-authored an article that highlighted how the potential benefits of vaping are overshadowed by all the panic surrounding the potential risks of adolescent vaping.

"As evidence suggests that e-cigarette use can increase the chances of quitting smoking, many scientists, including the authors of this essay, encourage the health community, media, and policymakers to more carefully consider vaping's potential to reduce smoking-related deaths in adults," the article reads.

The authors reviewed the health risks of e-cigarettes, their potential for smoking cessation, and discussed concerns about adolescent vaping. Considering all of this, they then highlighted the need to balance valid concerns about adolescent vaping and the potential benefits of the products for adult smoking cessation.
