Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you're always healthy, your sustenance is smooth, and all your activities are made easy!
The study titled, "Acute whole human 3D bronchial tissue exposure to electronic vapor product aerosols results in minimal cellular and transcriptomic responses when compared to cigarette smoke," was published in the journal Toxicological Research & Application.
With the aim of understanding the health effects of vapor and smoke exposure, the study involved sub-cytotoxic exposure of cells in a 3D human bronchial model to nicotine-containing vape aerosols, combustible cigarette smoke, and regular fresh air, under strict laboratory conditions.
The researchers then assessed the expression of various disease-related genes after 4 and 48-hour cellular 'recovery' periods. They found that exposure to cigarette smoke caused significant changes in gene expression, including changes in oxidative stress and inflammatory markers.
On the other hand, e-cigarette vapor produced only minimal responses, similar to those observed in cells exposed to fresh air. “Focusing on the 3R4F reference cigarette, no pathways were activated after four hours of exposure, but at 48 hours the cells had both cell cycle-related genes and cell death pathways activated. In contrast, cells exposed to vape aerosols showed a slight increase in the NF-KappaB signaling pathway after four hours of exposure. However, at 48 hours no pathways were activated,” said Imperial Principal Toxicologist Dr Liam Simms.
“These data provide evidence that after acute exposure to EVP aerosols, lung cell damage in culture is significantly less than an equivalent, nicotine-based dose of cigarette smoke,” concluded the study Abstract.
The data should be considered when developing policies
Head of Tobacco Harm Reduction Science at Imperial, Dr Grant O'Connell, said that the data presented by this study and others leading to the same conclusion should be taken seriously and considered when developing policies.
“This latest research adds to the growing body of research compiled by Imperial Brands and others, demonstrating the considerable potential for harm reduction from Next Generation Products (NGPs) such as vapes compared to continued combustible cigarette smoking.”
“We encourage regulators and policymakers to consider the weight of evidence demonstrating a clear scientific difference between combustible cigarettes, which burn tobacco, and potentially harm-reducing NGPs that do not,” O'Connell concluded.
