English Study on Nicotine Delivery: Vapes Are Better

Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you are always healthy, blessed with good fortune, and all your activities are made easy!

A study in the UK has been conducted to prove the effectiveness of vaping. It has shown that vaping is much more effective than other smoking cessation methods.

The new study, published this Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, has given vaping a new ranking among smoking cessation methods: squarely above, head and shoulders above the rest.

That should give ammunition to people who support this cessation method, and throw a wrench in the works for the FDA in the US, where the NEJM is widely read and highly respected. The FDA is actually considering a range of very strict anti-vaping measures and has even accused vaping of encouraging young people to smoke. The FDA will struggle to tarnish the reputation of this highly effective smoking cessation method in the name of tobacco control.

A study comparing vaping to pharmaceutical nicotine replacement products.

Supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment program, plus a grant from the Cancer Research UK Prevention Trials Unit, the research was led by Peter Hajek, a leading anti-smoking campaigner in the UK. A team of 13 doctors, psychologists, and pharmacists took on the challenge of comparing the efficacy of vaping with other smoking cessation methods.

886 smokers monitored for 12 months
The team worked with a group of random adults using the English National Health Service smoking cessation service. Participants were allocated either nicotine replacement products, or a combination of products, to be supplied for up to three months, or an e-cigarette starter kit (second-generation, refillable e-cigarette and a bottle of e-liquid containing 18mg nicotine), and recommended to purchase new e-liquid to match their desired taste and nicotine strength.

The study involved voluntary patients, who were given a choice between vaping and other replacements, patches, sprays, and gum.

Treatment included weekly behavioral support for a minimum of 4 weeks. The primary outcome was sustained abstinence for one year, which was biochemically verified during the last visit. Participants who left the study or who did not provide biochemical test results were considered not abstinent. Secondary outcomes included medication use and respiratory symptoms reported by study participants.

18% withdrawal effectiveness

In total, the study analyzed the results of 886 participants. The one-year abstinence rate was 18.0% in the vaping group, compared to 9.9% in the group using other nicotine replacements (e.g., patches, gum).

Among vapers, 18% quit smoking after 52 weeks, compared to 9% of participants using other methods.

Among participants who abstained for one year, those in the vaping group were more likely to be using their assigned products at 52 weeks than those in the nicotine replacement group (80% vs. 9%).

Overall, throat or mouth irritation was reported more frequently in the e-cigarette group (65.3% vs. 51.2% in the nicotine replacement group) and nausea was more frequent in the nicotine replacement group (37.9% vs. 31.3% in the e-cigarette group).

Smokers in the e-cigarette group reported a greater decrease in the incidence of cough and phlegm production from baseline to 52 weeks compared to smokers in the nicotine replacement group. There were no significant differences between groups in terms of wheezing or shortness of breath.
