“Participants who primarily used closed-system e-cigarettes showed similar preferences for both closed-system and open-system e-cigarettes, but those who primarily used open-system e-cigarettes preferred open systems over closed-system e-cigarettes. HTPs were the least preferred product, much lower than regular cigarettes, but participants living in states where IQOS was sold had similar preferences for both cigarettes and HTPs,” the study Abstract added.

Given these findings, the researchers concluded that people’s preferences are heavily influenced and biased by what they currently use. “People are unlikely to switch to other products/devices due to flavor or nicotine level restrictions. If non-tobacco and non-menthol flavors are banned from open-system e-cigarettes, users may switch to menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes.”
