Vapeboss – Hello vapers! Disney's live-action film The Little Mermaid has officially been released in Indonesian cinemas. This adaptation of Disney's classic cartoon The Little Mermaid has sparked a sense of nostalgia for many people worldwide. The cartoon has accompanied them since 1989.

The film tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid who falls in love with a human prince named Eric. To be with Eric, Ariel sacrifices her beautiful voice for a pair of legs to Ursula, the evil sea witch. However, Ariel must fight to win Eric's true love before it's too late.

Directed by Rob Marshall, known for directing musical films such as Chicago (2002) and Into the Woods (2014). The film stars Halle Bailey as the main character Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.

What's interesting about this film is the role of Ariel played by Halle Bailey. Halle is known as a black actress and singer who is a member of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle. She is also a protégé of Beyoncé.

This sparked a lot of controversy among many fans of the animated film The Little Mermaid. Some support and appreciate the decision as a form of diversity and inclusivity. However, there are also those who disagree and believe that Ariel should be white with red hair, like in the animated film.

Some people even created an online petition, asking Disney to replace the actress playing Ariel. They claimed that they were not racist but only wanted to respect the cultural heritage of Denmark, the origin of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Little Mermaid.

However, the petition failed to change Disney's decision. In fact, some people involved in the original animated film supported Halle Bailey. Halle Bailey herself admitted not to be affected by the criticism directed at her. She said that she only wanted to give her best for her role as Ariel.

"I feel so grateful and excited to be a part of this film," Bailey said in an interview with Variety in May 2021.

Despite the controversy, The Little Mermaid is a very interesting film. If you want to feel nostalgic or see talented actresses portraying fantasy characters, then this film is worth watching. So, are you ready to witness Ariel's adventure in finding love from Eric?
