The UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) has joined a chorus condemning the World Health Organization (WHO) for urging countries to take an aggressive anti-vaping stance ahead of a crucial health summit later this year.

According to leaked documents reported in the Daily Express, the WHO plans to use the COP9 Summit in November in the Netherlands as a platform to inform leading international health figures that e-cigarettes are as harmful as tobacco smoking.

UKVIA today followed criticism of the WHO by All-Party Parliamentary Group Chairman Mark Pawsey MP, who questioned why the UK Government continues to fund the organization to the tune of £340 million over the next four years.

UKVIA notes that this action contradicts the scientific reality of vaping in the UK, which has seen millions quit smoking in recent years. Research by UK scientists consistently shows vaping to be the most popular and successful aid to quitting smoking.

The Cochrane Review into e-cigarettes, widely recognized as the gold standard in research in this field, highlights that existing research shows vaping is almost 50% more effective in helping smokers quit than other cessation methods. The review found that as many as 11% of smokers who use nicotine e-cigarettes to quit smoking might successfully quit, compared to only 6% of smokers who use nicotine replacement therapy or nicotine-free e-cigarettes, or 4% of people who received no support or behavioral support alone.

There are already 3.2 million adults in the UK who have switched from smoking. The vaping industry needs to be supported as a British success story and capable of helping the other 6.9 million adult smokers in the UK. UKVIA is leading in this area through its annual VApril national campaign during April. VApril seeks to educate smokers about switching from conventional tobacco to e-cigarettes.

Responding to this news, John Dunne, Director General of the UK Vaping Industry Association, said:

“The World Health Organization’s stance is deeply concerning. The vaping industry in the UK, along with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Vaping, is right to call out this baseless attack on the sector. Vaping is a huge UK success story, enabling millions of people to switch from smoking.”

He added: “The APPG is also right to ask the UK Government to reconsider its level of funding to the World Health Organization in light of this report. Thankfully now the UK has left the EU, the UK is no longer bound by the WHO’s ridiculous and frankly dangerous messages urging the bloc to treat vaping in the same way as smoking.”
