Dr. Siegel pointed out that the detected levels of formaldehyde are consistent with levels typically found in indoor and outdoor air under baseline conditions, adding that the only other chemicals detected were ethanol (alcohol) and isopropyl alcohol.

"This study, although conducted under very high exposure conditions in a small, unventilated vape shop with many employees and customers seen vaping and vapor clouds visible, did not document any harmful levels of exposure to dangerous chemicals. Nicotine exposure was essentially non-existent. Formaldehyde exposure was no different from many indoor and outdoor environments at baseline. Acetone, acetoin, other aldehydes, toluene, benzene, and xylene were not detected. Chemicals that have been linked to "popcorn lung" were also not detected by standard methods." said Siegel.

No justification for the government to ban vaping

"This study adds to the evidence that under real-life conditions, secondhand vaping does not appear to pose a significant health risk." the public health expert concluded. He added that even though he himself has been behind many smoking bans, based on current evidence he fails to see any reason why governments should ban vaping in public spaces. "Regarding vaping, I just don't see any plausible evidence at this time that it poses a significant health hazard to bystanders."
