Vapeboss – Despite all the evidence to the contrary, most healthcare professionals inaccurately believe that all tobacco products (including vapes, which are associated but contain no tobacco) are equally harmful. A study titled, "Many physicians have misconceptions about e-cigarettes," found that due to misconceptions that unfairly target e-cigarettes, many doctors refrain from recommending them.
The study surveyed 2,058 physicians in the U.S. between 2018 and 2019, but unfortunately, 60% mistakenly believed that vaping products were as harmful as combustible tobacco products. Meanwhile, researchers found that doctors who believed in the concept of harm reduction generally had experienced their own struggles with quitting smoking, or had recommended the product when asked about vaping by their patients.
"Patient demand—that is, patients asking their physicians about e-cigarettes—was associated with an increased likelihood of recommending e-cigarettes," said study leader Dr. Cristine Delnevo, as quoted by Filter. "This association has been previously noted in the context of smoking cessation in general. Interestingly, our latest wave of data collection also highlighted that patients are also asking about nicotine pouches, and that physicians are learning from their patients about these products."
Data shows it is critical to educate doctors
Another notable finding was that doctors were more likely to recommend e-cigarettes to older, heavy smokers who had previously tried and failed to quit, while they preferred to prescribe recognized nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for younger, lighter smokers who were on their first attempt at smoking cessation.
Delnevo underscored that the findings highlight the importance of educating healthcare professionals about vaping. "These findings suggest it is critical to address physician misperceptions and educate them on the efficacy of e-cigarettes, particularly correcting their misperception that all tobacco products are equally harmful, contrary to the fact that combustible tobacco is by far the most harmful."
