Hello Bigboss! How are you today? Hope you're always healthy, your sustenance flows smoothly, and all your activities are made easy!

On this occasion, we will provide you with some information about a cohort-interventional study that examines whether smokers attempt to quit through vaping and report the same quit rates as those using commonly recommended smoking cessation aids.

The research, titled "Electronic cigarettes in standard smoking cessation treatment by tobacco counselors in Flanders: E-cigarette users show similar if not higher quit rates as those using commonly recommended smoking cessation aids," examines the success rates of smokers attempting to quit, more precisely, quitting through vaping.

Participants were recruited by tobacco counselors and followed a smoking cessation treatment (in groups) for 2 months. The participants were followed for 7 months after the quit date and were asked to complete questionnaires and submit eCO measurements.

"One-third of all participants (n = 244) achieved smoking abstinence 7 months after the quit date, with e-cigarette users having a higher chance of quitting smoking at the last session compared to NRT users," the researchers reported.

In line with previous findings, researchers found that vaping may be more effective than other NRTs in helping smokers quit. "People who smoke and choose e-cigarettes in the context of smoking cessation treatment by tobacco counselors show similar if not higher smoking cessation rates compared to those who choose evidence-based smoking cessation aids (or none at all)," they concluded.

Latest PHE data on vaping

In line with these findings, vaping advocates worldwide welcomed Public Health England's (PHE) latest report on vaping, which confirmed that vaping is the most commonly used method to quit smoking.

Conducted by renowned researchers at King's College London, PHE's seventh independent report on vaping in the UK highlighted the following points:

"Vaping was the most popular aid (27.2%) used by smokers attempting to quit in England in 2020.

More than 50,000 smokers quit smoking in 2017 with the help of vaping.

38% of smokers believe vaping is as harmful as smoking, while 15% believe vaping is more harmful."

Responding to the data, World Vapers' Alliance (WVA) director Michael Landl said that those who continue to demonize vaping are simply refuting scientific data. "Today's report from Public Health England is great news for vapers. We have further confirmation that vaping is a way out of smoking. Those who continue to claim that vaping is a gateway to smoking should take the time to read the science. 'Listen to the science' is something we hear a lot these days with COVID, but hopefully, those who continue to criticize vaping will listen this time. They cannot continue to pick and choose the science that suits them."
