Tasmania's Vape Regulations Deemed Too Strict

Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you are always healthy, blessed with good fortune, and all your activities are made easy!

From October 1st, vapers in Australia will only be allowed to purchase vaping products from pharmacies with a doctor's prescription. While retailers in neighboring New Zealand and most other countries can responsibly sell nicotine products without a prescription, anyone caught violating Australia's strict regulations will face hefty fines, and in some cases, even jail time.

And while tobacco control entities urge other countries not to follow suit, as Australia's strategy has recently led to an increase in smoking rates, Rockliff proposed it. "While we have made some progress in tackling Tasmania's smoking rates, we have also seen attempts to 'renormalize' smoking within our community, particularly through the use of e-cigarettes, or vaping."

"To address this significant and growing health concern, we are putting in place a strong framework through the Public Health (Tasmania Healthy) Bill 2017 Amendment and the Poisons Act 1971 to regulate e-cigarettes," he said.

Unfortunately, the Health Minister added that they will continue to follow WHO recommendations. "We will continue to follow the recommendations from the World Health Organization and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia to have a regulatory framework. We will not weaken our existing laws that protect the health of Tasmanians."

Countries that follow WHO guidelines have higher smoking rates

Meanwhile, a recent 59-page white paper discussing case studies in several countries aimed at measuring progress in smoking cessation has confirmed what THR experts have known all along. Countries that follow World Health Organization guidelines continue to struggle with higher smoking rates, than those that do not.

Titled 'Vaping Works. International Best Practices: The UK, New Zealand, France, and Canada,' the publication was released by the Property Rights Alliance. It consists of four case studies by Christopher Snowdon (Institute of Economic Affairs, UK), Louis Houlbrooke (New Zealand Taxpayers' Union, New Zealand), Patrick Coquart (IREF, France), and Prof Ian Irvine (Concordia University, Canada) respectively.

"Countries that have adopted progressive Tobacco Harm Reduction policies are enjoying significant declines in smoking rates. Whereas those that follow World Health Organization guidelines continue to experience illness and death from excessive smoking," said the Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA), referring to the paper.

CAPHRA Executive Coordinator Nancy Loucas said that this significant data coincided with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) COP9 session held earlier this month. "Ultimately, this paper proves that countries that embrace vaping, such as France, the UK, New Zealand, and Canada, have seen smoking rates decline twice as fast as the global average," she said.
