Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you're always healthy, your sustenance flows smoothly, and all your activities are made easy!!
A paper titled "PuffPacket: A Platform for Unobtrusively Tracking the Fine-Grained Consumption Patterns of E-Cigarette Users" written by Alexander Adams, a doctoral student in information science at Cornell Tech, explains the necessity of a vape device called PuffPacket. "There's been a surge in the prevalence of e-cigarette use, especially in recent years, but we don't really understand how people are using them," he said.
The first device of its kind, it can be easily attached to all types of e-cigarettes to monitor and provide information related to their use. "We wanted to find a way to map how people are using e-cigarettes to determine what the triggers are," Adams said. "The lack of continuous and objective understanding of vaping behavior led us to develop PuffPacket," he added.
Regarding the alleged "epidemic" of US youth vaping.
Devices like PuffPacket are being designed to address the alleged "epidemic" of youth vaping advertised by US authorities. According to the CDC, from 2018 to 2019 alone, e-cigarette use among middle and high school students increased by 1.8 million, from 3.6 million to 5.4 million. However, many public health experts argue that these figures are taken out of context.
In fact, a recent study published in Pediatrics has shown that between 2011 and 2018, as e-cigarette use increased, adolescent smokers smoked less per day and on fewer days, suggesting that adolescents currently vaping would most likely have smoked instead. Nevertheless, everyone (including vape advocates) agrees that youth vaping needs to be regulated and such devices should only be used as smoking cessation tools.
High-tech, yet user-friendly.
Meanwhile, PuffPacket researchers have developed three versions of the device with various attributes, such as ease of installation and long battery life. The device utilizes the e-cigarette's own signals, as well as Bluetooth technology, to track the intensity, duration, and frequency of inhalations.
The collected data is then transmitted to a smartphone, which includes location, time, and any activity – such as walking, standing, or driving, to help identify what circumstances might trigger people to vape. "Getting these correlations between time, place, and activity is important for understanding addiction," Adams said. "Research has shown that if you can take people away from their normal habits, it can disrupt them. This creates an opportunity for moments of intervention."
The researchers aim to make PuffPacket as inexpensive and user-friendly as possible. Attaching the device to a user's e-cigarette and smartphone is expected to provide more accurate results than methods that require people to manually record their vaping habits.
