Vapeboss – In Indonesia, the percentage of adult smokers has decreased to around 11 percent, down from approximately 12.5 percent in 2020 and 2021. A similar trend is observed in superpowers, where the consumption of conventional cigarettes has declined as some individuals switch to e-cigarettes.
In the United States, adult smokers accounted for 42 percent in the mid-1960s. This figure gradually decreased over several decades due to the impact of cigarette taxes, rising prices of tobacco products, smoking bans, and a shift in the general public's perception of conventional cigarettes.
Garindra Kartasasmita, Secretary-General of the Indonesian Personal Vaporizer Association (APVI), stated that people are increasingly aware of the health risks associated with smoking. Therefore, the use of alternative tobacco products can help adult smokers transition away from their habit.
Garindra, who is also a former smoker who has switched to alternative tobacco products, mentioned that access to comprehensive information about alternative tobacco products must be widely available to prevent hoaxes.
"We hope the government will be more open and objective towards research on alternative tobacco products so that the public receives accurate information," he said, as reported by Antara on Tuesday (18/4/2023).
In other countries, there has been extensive research on alternative tobacco, especially regarding health aspects, indicating that people who smoke using vapes have lower risks, thus serving as an alternative for those who want to quit smoking. However, research on the use of alternative tobacco in Indonesia is still very limited, particularly in terms of health aspects.
