Vapeboss – Most users certainly understand the risks of smoking in a car. Besides making the car cabin smell stale, this behavior can also damage the AC components.
However, nowadays, a new type of smoking device called an electronic cigarette or vape has emerged. Unlike conventional cigarettes that are burned, vapes rely on a vaporization system to produce vapor.
The smoke produced also smells fresh and is not harsh. This makes some drivers consider vaping in the car risk-free and unlike smoking, but it turns out this assumption is wrong. Nizar Muzaki, an AC Specialist Workshop Technician at Dokter Mobil, explained that e-cigarettes still carry the risk of damaging car AC components.
Although the cabin may be free from a harsh smell, the vapor from e-cigarettes that collects can enter the cooling ducts and contaminate the evaporator components. The evaporator can become slimy and cause the circulation process to be suboptimal. This ultimately causes the car AC to feel less cold.
"Moreover, vape vapor is very thick (lots of smoke), so the possibility of it getting dirty can be faster than regular cigarettes," he said.
Zaki recounted his recent experience when he handled a case of a blocked evaporator experienced by one of his customers.
"He (the customer) likes to vape in the car, so the evaporator became slimy and clogged, similar to cigarettes. So it's best not to use any type of cigarette so that the evaporator components are safe," he said.
The only way to deal with a slimy evaporator is a complete cleaning. This process is relatively simple but can be risky if users are late in doing it. Because a slimy evaporator will be more prone to rust and corrosion. If this happens, the cooling circulation process will be significantly reduced.
