Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? I hope you are always healthy, have a smooth flow of sustenance, and that all your activities are made easy!

Analyzing cross-sectional data from the CDC's National Youth Tobacco Survey between 1999 and 2020, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have found that adolescent smoking has consistently declined as vaping has increased.

The research team found that while e-cigarette use has drastically increased since 2014 and is the most commonly used nicotine or tobacco product among middle and high school students, this has led to a sharp decrease in the use of more harmful combustible tobacco products.

They also found that the CDC's measure of tobacco product use, a binary measure asking whether someone has used a tobacco product in the past 30 days, failed to differentiate between nicotine product uses in terms of their risk. “The majority of cigarette brands contain similar ingredients, concentrations, and chemicals,” said Ruoyan Sun, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Health Care Organization and Policy at the UAB School of Public Health and a researcher on the study.

“In contrast, there is a wide variety of e-cigarette products with different chemical levels and makeup. To track nicotine and tobacco use patterns and their associated risks more accurately, surveys need to account for product use frequency and product-specific risks.”

Utah Vaping Rates Decline

Meanwhile, the results of Utah's Student Health and Risk Prevention (SHARP) survey released earlier this month revealed that substance abuse, as well as vaping, is decreasing among young people across the State.

Discussing the findings, Utah Department of Health (UDOH) spokesperson Ryan Bartlett said that the sharp decline in adolescent vaping rates is likely a consequence of health concerns, especially in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic. “What we've seen this year is a very sharp decline in vaping. Just a couple of years ago, Surgeon General Jerome Adams announced that vaping was an epidemic among young people. The current data shows this is a declining trend across the country,” Bartlett said.
