Vapeboss – A 2021 Cochrane review examining the use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation included 61 studies conducted in 14 countries and comprised a total of 16,759 adult participants. The data collected indicated that nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are more effective in helping people quit smoking than other alternatives, such as nicotine gum or patches.

Led by Jamie Hartmann-Boyce, a director at the University of Oxford's Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, the review reinforces the arguments of countless anti-smoking groups and tobacco harm reduction experts who have long advocated for the product as a smoking cessation tool.

Meanwhile, an article published in the American Journal of Public Health highlighted that the potential for smoking cessation through e-cigarettes is largely overshadowed by media coverage of the potential risks represented by vaping for adolescents.

Kenneth Warner, emeritus dean and Avedis Donabedian Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and 14 past presidents of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco co-authored the article highlighting how the potential benefits of vaping are being overlooked.

“Because evidence indicates that e-cigarette use can increase the likelihood of quitting smoking, many scientists, including the authors of this essay, urge the health community, the media, and policymakers to more carefully weigh the potential of vaping to reduce smoking-related deaths in adults,” the article stated.
