As per the title above, on this occasion, we will briefly discuss research conducted by several academics from the Faculty of Dentistry, Padjajaran University. The academics involved in this research are Amaliya, Agus Susanto, and Jimmy Gunawan.

In the research conducted, they took a case study when there was a bacterial attack in the oral cavity, especially the gum area. The normal body response when such a case occurs is in the form of gum inflammation or Gingiva.

The research, titled "Gingival Response in Vapers During Experimental Gingivitis," which they conducted, proves that the Nicotine consumed by Vapers is not the trigger for Gingivitis.

"I want to see, what about those who use vapes? So we conducted research on three groups," said Amaliya.

This research involved respondents aged 18-25 years, consisting of five females and 10 males. Then, the respondents were divided into three different groups without gender distinction.

The categories of group division included smokers with a minimum of one year of consumption, non-dual user vape users (without smoking) who switched to nicotine vapes for at least one year, and non-users of anything (neither smoking nor vaping).

Before the research began, all respondents had undergone a thorough plaque cleaning process. Then, the respondents were asked to use an acrylic stent in the lower jaw during the research period (21 days), the purpose of which was to prevent that part from being brushed when the respondents brushed their teeth and to allow bacterial accumulation to occur.

At the end of the experiment, researchers found a reaction in the form of gum inflammation that was not brushed for 21 days in respondents who were not cigarette and vape users. According to Amaliya, this is normal because it is part of the body's defense mechanism.

Meanwhile, in smoker respondents, no inflammation was found, but bacteria in the form of plaque were attached to the teeth.

"So, there is a kind of mask that deceives our bodies. As if nothing is happening. This is dangerous," explained Amaliya.

Then, in the non-dual user vapers group, the same reaction was found as in the non-vape and cigarette user group, which was inflammation. Therefore, according to Amaliya, nicotine is not the cause of inflammation. So, statements that claim nicotine is the cause are not proven.

"This means there is something else in cigarettes, besides nicotine, that makes the inflammation invisible. We don't know what it is, but it turns out it's not nicotine," she concluded.

The research conducted by Amaliya and her team is in line with research conducted by medical institutions in the UK. The UK Royal College of Physicians proved that the cause of disease risk is not from smoking habits, but from other harmful substances due to cigarette smoke through its combustion.

In conclusion, non-combustible HPTL products greatly reduce harmful substances, and furthermore, through this research, HPTL products like vapes have a lower health risk than cigarettes.

Amaliya also hopes that more domestic research on HPTL products will be conducted.

"Indeed, research on these alternative tobacco products is still very limited in Indonesia," she said. Amaliya concluded.
