In a release on the University's website, lead researcher Dr. Emma Ward, from UEA's Norwich Medical School, said that the device will help expand on dual-use. “Dual use of e-cigarettes and tobacco is common and more than a third of e-cigarette users in the UK also continue to smoke. But we know that tobacco smoking is far more harmful than vaping, and that people who switch from smoking to vaping are more likely to remain smoke-free. Vaping is a harm reduction approach to quitting smoking, allowing users to cope with nicotine withdrawal by using nicotine in a less harmful way.”

“We want to find out more about how dual-use varies over time, and what factors help or hinder smokers from transitioning from tobacco smoking to using e-cigarettes. The new technology we are using is more reliable and sophisticated than the puff counters integrated into many vaporizers and works with precision measurement of the voltage applied to the atomizer through puff duration. This records puff topography to build a personalized profile of user vaping patterns,” Ward added.

Distribute free vapes to smokers

Another recent study in the UK, titled, "The Value of Providing Free Electronic Cigarettes to Smokers: Smoking Reduction and Cessation Associated with Three-Month Provision of Refillable Tank-Style Electronic Cigarettes to Smokers," looked at cessation rates and smoking reduction associated with providing free e-cigarettes to smokers.

The researchers found that after 90 days, the rate of complete abstinence was 36.5%, up from 0% at baseline. Daily smoking frequency decreased from 88.7% to 17.5%, and the average cigarette consumption per day dropped from 15 sticks to 5 sticks. Similarly, the average number of days per month participants smoked also decreased from 30 to 13, after 90 days.

“Based on these results, there may be value in smoking cessation services and other services that ensure smokers are provided with e-cigarettes at zero or minimal cost for at least a short period,” the researchers concluded.
