Vapeboss – The UK government is being urged by councils across England and Wales to ban the sale of disposable vapes or single-use e-cigarettes in 2024 to protect health and the environment.

The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales, stated that such a ban is crucial and needs to be implemented immediately. Even the European Union (EU) has proposed a similar ban in 2026, and France will impose this ban in December 2023.

Because if only restricted, it will risk disposable vape devices potentially flooding the market in the UK.

The LGA also reported that 1.3 million disposable vapes are discarded every week. This is considered dangerous for the environment due to the accumulation of waste and litter, and it can even cause fires involving waste collection trucks.

The utilization of recycling systems is almost impossible except with special methods, as disposable vapes are designed with the battery integrated into the plastic. The LGA also mentioned that councils are concerned about the effects of vaping on children and adolescents.

"Essentially, disposable vapes have a design flaw and the product is unsustainable," said LGA Community Wellbeing Board Chairman David Fothergill.

"This means an immediate ban would prove more effective than trying to recycle more vapes," he added.

Meanwhile, the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) defended the sale of disposable vapes. The association's director general, John Dunne, explained that the vaping industry is working hard to minimize the environmental impact of the devices.

He also warned that if restrictions continue to be imposed, the impact would be worse as it would open up the potential for a black market in the UK.

"Disposable devices have been around for over a decade and provide an accessible, low-cost product, helping smokers quit," he told BBC radio.
