A year after menthol cigarettes were banned in the UK, more than two-thirds of vape businesses reported an increase in sales of menthol-flavored e-liquids, according to a study by the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA).

The study revealed that over two-thirds (70%) of both brick-and-mortar store owners and online retail operations said they had seen an increase in demand for menthol vape products. And, while fruity e-liquids remain customer favorites, menthol is the second most popular flavor, according to the survey.

Tim Phillips, an independent analyst at ECigIntelligence, said:

"What we're seeing in the UK is that menthol as an ingredient in vape e-liquids continues to rise following the ban on combustible menthol, and it is now one of the most important components of all e-liquids."

UKVIA Director General John Dunne said the survey results were a clear indication of the importance of e-cigarettes in helping smokers quit their habit in favor of vaping, which Public Health England acknowledges is much safer than combustible tobacco.

"Our retailer survey clearly shows that, as menthol cigarettes are no longer sold, vape shops are seeing increased sales of the same flavor in liquid form."

He continued: “It is not unreasonable to suspect that the majority of menthol liquid sales above pre-ban, sellers were those who had previously smoked.”

“This is further proof from our industry highlighting the crucial role vaping can play in offering smokers a transition away from tobacco and supporting the Government's target for a smoke-free UK.”

“As we await the Government’s response to the review of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR), it is clear that the UK can now leverage its independence from the EU, strengthening its position as a global leader in tobacco harm reduction.”

He added: "The government should recognize the vital role vaping is already playing for people who want to switch from smoking tobacco and work with the sector to enhance this."
