Vapeboss – The high prevalence of conventional smokers in Indonesia has led to various efforts to reduce this number. Recently, a group of researchers from Padjadjaran University (UNPAD), supported by the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, Smile Study, and Replica 2.0, held an international webinar with risk reduction experts from various countries.

UNPAD researchers themselves are partners of the Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR). In the discussion, a researcher from the Faculty of Medicine UNPAD, Dr. Ronny Lesmana, stated that the combustion process in cigarettes produces various substances harmful to health such as cadmium, radioactive polonium, and alkaloids.

In his research, Dr. Ronny explained that in Indonesia, many vegetables containing beta-carotene, such as carrots, can reduce the effects of inflammation caused by cigarette consumption.

"The antioxidant content in beta-carotene has the potential to reduce inflammation, especially that which occurs in various cardiovascular diseases," he said.

Another researcher from the Faculty of Dentistry UNPAD, Drg. Amaliya M.Sc., PhD, stated that the number of conventional smokers is still high, at around 57 million people. In relation to this, health experts continue to educate the public to reduce the risks resulting from the use of conventional cigarettes. One way is through alternative tobacco and nicotine products for adult smokers.

"In research, e-cigarettes almost eliminate aldehyde emissions. In addition, exposure to formaldehyde and acetaldehyde from e-cigarettes is also lower compared to exposure from inhaling indoor air," explained Drg. Amaliya.

Furthermore, she added that quitting smoking completely is the best course of action, although the use of alternative tobacco and nicotine products can reduce the negative impact of conventional cigarettes.

Meanwhile, Professor of Biological Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy UNPAD, Prof. apt. Melisa Intan Barliana, Med. Sc., Ph.D, emphasized the importance of further research related to alternative tobacco products. Currently, she is conducting research involving conventional cigarettes and alternative tobacco products.
