Vapeboss – The Greens NSW, also known as the NSW Greens, a green political party in New South Wales and a member of the Australian Greens, has revealed plans to legalize nicotine vapes for people aged 18 and over.
The strategy would limit nicotine levels, prohibit the use of harmful chemicals, and require health warnings on all vaping products. Greens health spokesperson Cate Faehrmann said the plan is to regulate vapes and keep them out of the reach of children, as well as to end the black market for them.
In NSW, the sale of vapes is considered a major issue for health authorities, as the devices are widely sold freely by tobacco sellers and newsagents.
"Prohibition has failed once again. Banning nicotine vapes has only created a thriving black market that gives children easy access to nicotine products," Ms. Faehrmann said.
"People will access nicotine vapes regardless of the law. By regulating nicotine vaping, we can ensure that people know what they are vaping and are not exposed to harmful chemicals or extremely high nicotine levels," she added.
In addition, the strategy also proposes a program of educational funding aimed at teenagers to warn them about the dangers of vaping and places requirements on manufacturers to reduce waste and recycle used vapes.
"Illegal nicotine vapes contribute significantly to the waste crisis. As part of regulating nicotine vapes, we would make manufacturers responsible for the end-of-life of these products and require retailers to operate 'vape waste' disposal points," Ms. Faehrmann said.
Australians currently require a prescription to access nicotine vapes, even though they are legal and widely available in the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand, and European Union countries.
