The Surabaya City Government is currently continuously disseminating information related to the Regional Regulation that implements Non-Smoking Areas (KTR) in Surabaya City. This regulation will be effective starting at the end of August 2022, and KTR violators will be fined.

Eri Cahyadi, as the Mayor of Surabaya, said that there would be several stages for implementing fines for violators. Starting from warnings, to the imposition of fines according to the regional regulation.

"The fines have been set by our colleagues, but we are still socializing this. Don't be surprised if fines are suddenly imposed. God willing, early next week or at the end of the month, we will ensure that fines are implemented. If it can be properly socialized," said Eri.

Not only socializing, but the Surabaya City Government has also been conducting raids recently. Eri asked the public to participate in making the KTR regulation successful by respecting each other and reprimanding or reminding people who violate it.

"We will conduct raids. So actually, it's like this. If there is a regional regulation for non-smoking areas, for example, it means no smoking is allowed. Why do we have to raid, so that citizens respect each other and citizens are the ones who should (actually) be raiding," he explained.

Eri also emphasized to the residents of Surabaya City not to always blame the government if there are KTR violators among fellow citizens. Because according to Eri, everyone, including citizens, also has an obligation to protect Surabaya City.

"Don't say later if a resident walks by and there's someone smoking, violating, and then says, 'Why is the government just quiet?' Well, the citizens must also protect this city," he asserted.

He asked his residents that if they find KTR violators but are afraid to reprimand them, they can report directly to the Surabaya City Government so that it can be followed up. Then, Eri reminded that this KTR issue does not only apply to smokers, but also the use of vapes or e-cigarettes in KTR is also considered a violation.

"It's the same. Smoking is about the smoke. Even if it's vape, it has smoke. Not everyone likes it. So this is also the same, it means there are places where you are not allowed to smoke or vape. So I ask for socialization to the residents, and residents must also remind others," he said.
