Comparing the Effects of Smoking VS Vaping Through Urine Sampling

Their study is titled, "Urinary biomonitoring of subjects with different smoking habits. Part I: Profiling mercapturic acids.", In this study, they analyzed urine samples from sixty-seven healthy adults with different "smoking" behaviors: 38 were non-smokers, 7 were vapers, and 22 were traditional cigarette smokers.

While it is common knowledge that regular cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic, for humans, it is widely believed that the content of vape products is less known. To this effect, the researchers aimed to determine and compare exposures associated with different products, by profiling mercapturic acids from urine as biomarkers of toxic compounds.

In line with countless previous studies, the collected data confirms that regular cigarettes are a major source of carcinogenic chemicals such as benzene and 1,3-butadiene. In comparison, e-cigarettes are a minor source and are mostly associated with exposure to chemicals with lower carcinogenic potential, such as acrylonitrile and acrolein.

Vapers Inhale Fewer Carcinogens Than Smokers

A similar study in 2018 also based on urine samples showed that vapers inhaled more heavy metals from the atomizer coil lining and carcinogens from cotton than non-vapers, but when compared to smokers, it was far less than smokers using conventional cigarettes.

This study, titled Comparison of Nicotine and Toxicant Exposure in Electronic Cigarette and Combustible Cigarette Users, was published in the JAMA Network Open journal. Researchers analyzed urine samples from 5,105 participants, comparing samples from smokers, vapers, dual users (both), and non-users.

Naturally, participants who did not smoke or vape showed the lowest levels of toxic chemical content in their urine, "Compared with exclusive electronic cigarette users, vapers never had significantly lower biomarker concentrations of 19% to 81% of exposure to nicotine, TSNAs, several metals (e.g., cadmium and lead), and several VOCs (including acrylonitrile)."

Participants who used vape showed lower levels than smokers. "Exclusive e-cigarette users showed significantly lower biomarker exposure concentrations of 10% to 98%, including TSNAs, PAHs, most VOCs, and nicotine, compared with exclusive smokers; concentrations were comparable for metals and 3 VOCs."
