Vapeboss – Becoming an astronaut is the dream of many children around the world. Exploring space in a distinctive astronaut suit holds a special appeal for many. From an aesthetic perspective, spacecraft crew uniforms indeed have their own unique characteristics and appeal. With very strict safety standards, astronaut suits when heading into space have a very high price. A company has to spend a considerable amount to design suits for its astronauts. NASA recently announced that they have allocated around Rp4.2 trillion to create the latest astronaut suit called the exploration extravehicular mobility unit (xEMU).

The preview of the space suits was held in Texas, specifically at NASA Space Center Houston. There, the prototype space suit debuted for a new era of lunar travel. There was one space suit in fashionable black with flashes of orange and blue. Although several suits appeared at the time, eventually all will be classic white, just like those used for the Apollo space missions more than 50 years ago.

This new model of space suit is crucial, as it provides life support equipment to supply air and protect astronauts from radiation and micrometeoroids. However, it still requires many updates.

"Apollo used zippers, metal cables, and rubber in suits that were 1960s technology and good for one mission, but that's no longer the issue," said Bill Ayrey, author of the book Lunar Outfitters: Making the Apollo Space Suit.

"The biggest advancements came right after Apollo when the Shuttle suits were designed and consisted of many interchangeable components to accommodate more crew members," said Ayrey, a former space suit test engineer and historian at ILC Dover. This is the company that made the Apollo suits and those currently used by astronauts for space travel from the International Space Station (ISS). ILC Dover is one of Collins Aerospace's partners in creating new space suits for the ISS.

Once completed, the new Lunar Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) space suit must undergo testing in environments similar to space. A NASA spokesperson outlined what is required: "Analog demonstrations can be conducted underwater using load release, using a thermal vacuum chamber, or other methods approved by NASA."
