Vaping with alcohol liquid is sometimes referred to as an alternative that can make you feel the sensation of alcohol like intoxication instantly, but this should only be a myth. Here's why vaping alcohol is just as dangerous, if not more so, than drinking alcohol.
When you inhale alcohol vapor, alcohol is absorbed in the lungs and completely bypasses the respiratory system. Alcohol molecules are then transported directly from the lungs to the bloodstream and then to the brain. This causes you to quickly feel the effects of alcohol directly from vaping. Most of the appeal of vaping alcohol is getting you drunk very quickly. But consuming too much alcohol in any form is still unhealthy for the body.
Inhaling hot vapor from the effects of heated alcohol can irritate and even damage your lungs. This can lead to long-term respiratory problems and a higher risk of lung infections. Studies on the effects of vaping on the lungs are limited, and there are even fewer studies looking at the effects of alcohol vaping on the lungs.
In fact, newer research continues to show that many factors are involved in the relationship between nicotine and alcohol consumption. A study involving nearly 3.4 million people of diverse ancestries has identified thousands of genetic variants that link tobacco and alcohol use. Titled, "Genetic diversity fuels gene discovery for tobacco and alcohol use," the study found more than 3,500 genetic variations that could potentially influence smoking and drinking behavior.
Published in Nature on December 7, the study confirmed that while both behaviors are influenced by environmental and social factors, there is evidence that genetics can influence tobacco and alcohol consumption. "We're at a stage where genetic discoveries are being translated" into clinical applications, said study author Dajiang Liu, a statistical geneticist at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. "If we can predict someone's risk of developing nicotine or alcohol dependence using this information, we can intervene early and potentially prevent many deaths."
There is not much research on recreational alcohol vaping, but several factors suggest that it is unsafe and could be more dangerous than traditional alcoholic beverages. Vaping alcohol might sound like a new way to get drunk while avoiding the taste of alcohol. However, it carries serious health and safety risks, including alcohol poisoning and lung damage.
