Hello Bigboss!! How are you all today? I hope you're always healthy, all your activities are made easier, and your sustenance is flowing smoothly!

So, on this occasion, we will briefly discuss a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which reported that the combination of vaping and counseling is twice as effective as counseling alone in helping smokers quit.

The study consisted of a randomized controlled trial involving 376 participants, and the findings showed that at 12 weeks, those who used vapes were twice as likely to quit compared to those who did not use vape products. On the other hand, the research team reported that at 24 weeks, there was little difference between the two groups.

Approximately one-third of the study participants (128) were given nicotine-containing vape products along with regular counseling sessions, while 127 volunteers were given non-nicotine products and counseling. The remaining 121 participants were only offered counseling.

The trial found that at 12 weeks, 21.9% of participants given nicotine-containing vape products had quit smoking, while only 17.3% of participants given non-nicotine vape products succeeded, and only 9.1% of those who solely received counseling. The researchers concluded that those who used nicotine-containing vapes were 2.4 times more likely to quit than those who did not.

"These findings suggest that nicotine e-cigarettes are effective for short-term smoking cessation," said lead author Mark J. Eisenberg, MD, MPH, a cardiologist at the Jewish General Hospital and professor of medicine at McGill University, who also stated, "Vaping with counseling is more effective than counseling alone, although it is not a magic bullet for smoking cessation."

Vape and Counseling double smokers' chances of quitting

"This study shows that using nicotine-containing e-cigarettes and counseling is roughly twice as likely to result in smoking cessation as smokers who only receive counseling. This difference is statistically significant at three months and, although no longer statistically significant, remains of similar relative magnitude at six months," said John Britton, emeritus professor of epidemiology at the University of Nottingham.

The researchers added that unfortunately, these findings would not be considered very influential because their trial was halted prematurely due to an inability to recruit the required number of participants.

"This is a well-conducted study with one major flaw—it was too small to produce reliable evidence on the effectiveness of e-cigarettes. This is because the study was designed to be too small and then unable to recruit the target number of people into the study due to issues with e-cigarette manufacturing," said Paul Aveyard, professor of behavioral medicine at Oxford University—who was not involved in the study.
