• Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes can help people stop smoking and are as effective as other cessation options.
• People should be able to use e-cigarettes as one of several options to support smoking cessation, if they wish.

Similarly, Yorkshire Cancer Research has praised the move. “We are delighted to see that vaping products have been included in NICE’s tobacco guidelines,” said Dr Kathryn Scott, Chief Executive at Yorkshire Cancer Research. “The Charity’s goal is for 2,000 more people in Yorkshire to survive cancer every year. With over 4,500 new cases of cancer linked to smoking in the region every year, helping people to quit smoking is vital to achieving this goal.”

World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) Director Michael Landl said that the UK has been a leader in supporting the use of safer alternatives for tobacco harm reduction, and local smoking rates reflect this. “Once again, the UK is setting an example to the world on how to effectively and pragmatically help smokers quit. The UK authorities are following the evidence and supporting tools that actually work. They are supporting smokers to switch to vaping.”

Public Health England (PHE), also an agency of the UK Department of Health, has consistently recommended switching from smoking to using e-cigarettes for several years. “Due to this proactive approach, the UK is seeing better results in reducing smoking compared to countries where vaping is restricted,” Landl added. “The UK’s successful public health and vaping policies should be followed by other countries around the world.”
