Two studies conducted in the UK in 2020 aimed to determine the relationship between dual use and successful smoking cessation. The study, titled "The Association Between Dual Use of E-Cigarettes and Smoking Cessation: A Prospective Study of Smokers in England," examined this by analyzing tobacco use behavior in a group of 1,498 smokers in England.

The results showed that while dual use of e-cigarettes was not associated with an overall decrease in cessation rates when compared to exclusive smoking or dual use of NRT, it was associated with slightly higher rates of quit attempts than exclusive smoking, but lower than dual use of NRT.

Programs specifically designed for Dual Users

A second study, "Is Dual Use of Nicotine Products and Cigarettes Associated with Smoking Reduction and Cessation Behavior? A Prospective Study in England," analyzed once again the relationship between dual use and cessation activities (smoking reduction, quit attempts, and use of evidence-based cessation aids).

A total of 413 current smokers participated in the Smoking Aids Study, a representative survey of adults in the UK, recruited and providing data at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. The collected data showed that dual users of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes smoked less per day at follow-up than at baseline, when compared to dual users of NRT and tobacco.

This study addresses the problem by attempting to develop specific smoking cessation programs tailored for people caught in this pattern. "Using formative data from in-depth interviews and utilizing student verification, we adapted an existing and validated self-help smoking cessation intervention (Stop Smoking for Good; SSFG) to create an intervention targeted at dual users, If You Vape: A Guide to Quitting Smoking (IYV)."

Strategies used by successful smokers

The research team looked at vape strategies used by people who successfully quit smoking, suggesting that they should be implemented. "Findings lead to the inclusion of e-cigarette specific strategies used by successful smokers such as gradually reducing nicotine levels, switching from tobacco flavors to alternative flavors, and restricting e-cigarette use to places where they would normally smoke (i.e., not expanding use)."

"Recommendations from Phase II student verification included expanding visual appeal for younger and more diverse demographics, expanding tips for quitting smoking through e-cigarettes, and expanding terminology for e-cigarette devices. Starting with an efficacious self-help intervention, we used a systematic process to develop a specific version for dual users."
