Vapeboss – The Chairman of the Indonesian Personal Vaporizer Association (APVI), Aryo Andrianto, stated that the e-cigarette industry has the potential to become a leading new industry.
"The e-cigarette industry has been around for 10 years in Indonesia and only gained attention in 2017, was subject to excise duty in 2018, and has continued to develop ever since," said Aryo during a discussion on addictive substances in the Health Bill in Jakarta recently.
According to him, there is currently no country in the world that prohibits the use of e-cigarettes. In fact, some countries that previously imposed strict restrictions are now opening up and updating their regulations.
Currently, he said, the Omnibus Law Health Bill continues to be a public discourse. One of the points that has drawn pros and cons is tobacco products, which are categorized as addictive substances along with narcotics, psychotropics, and alcoholic beverages.
Aryo explained that e-cigarettes refer to research from several countries, such as England and New Zealand. To date, there are six million e-cigarette users in Indonesia and the industry has created 200,000 new jobs.
"The industry continues to grow and also coexists with tobacco farmers," he said.
He emphasized that his organization is continuously developing research on local tobacco products for e-cigarette ingredients.
E-cigarettes (vape), he said, use more than 50 percent local tobacco. Currently, they are exploring how to make it 100 percent local tobacco.
"We hope that the government and legislature can provide support and together build this industry," he said.
Aryo stated that with the support of policymakers, e-cigarettes can become a new leading industry.
