The Relationship Between Vaping and Mental Health

Hello Bigboss! How are you today? Hope you're always healthy, your sustenance is abundant, and all your activities are made easy!

Several studies show that when adolescents consume nicotine, given their still-developing brains, they are not only more likely to become addicted to nicotine but also to other substances. Additionally, nicotine has been found to affect dopamine pathways, and therefore dependence has been linked to mood disorders including anxiety and depression and behavioral problems such as impulsivity.

Research also suggests that nicotine also alters coping mechanisms in the brain, which increases sensitivity to stress. This creates a vicious cycle, meaning that this sensitivity increases as nicotine is consumed in higher doses, which in turn leads to more nicotine consumption.

In fact, data continues to show that mental health patients are more likely to smoke than individuals who do not suffer from psychological or psychiatric conditions. Furthermore, these individuals are more likely to find it harder to quit. To this effect, they greatly benefit from having extra support in relation to smoking cessation and access to safer alternatives, which will at least reduce their chances of also suffering from smoke-related conditions.

Tailored smoking cessation programs

On the other hand, a recent report by former UK smoking cessation services manager, Louise Ross, the third in a series of five, states that nicotine is not what kills smokers and highlights the importance of improving the understanding that e-cigarettes are much safer than smoking, and can be used to help smokers quit.

She added that nurses are in an excellent position to promote smoking cessation. Given that research has shown that smokers respond well to intensive cessation treatment tailored to their needs, Ross explained, nurses who understand the individual needs of patients are ideally placed to provide ongoing smoking cessation support.

Moreover, she underlined, smokers who use psychotropic drugs tend to require higher doses of nicotine. "Tar (and not nicotine) in tobacco smoke also increases the need for some high-dose psychotropic medications, so quitting smoking allows some people to be prescribed lower doses and experience fewer side effects (NCSCT, 2018)."
