The industry is also capable of understanding changing times and societal developments.

These alternative tobacco products were created to minimize the risks or negative impacts of conventional cigarettes on health, as well as to serve as a transition for smokers to quit smoking. There are various types of these alternative tobacco products, from e-cigarettes (vapes or e-cigs) to the latest, most sophisticated type, heat-not-burn (HNB) products, which are tobacco products that are heated rather than burned, producing smoke-free products.

Along with e-cigarettes, HNB cigarettes provide an alternative to combustible cigarettes for smokers who are unwilling or unable to quit smoking. The tobacco industry has recognized that the sustainability of combustible cigarettes is compromised in the long term and has developed a diverse range of offerings. In the view of the tobacco lobby, HNB cigarettes offer the benefits of harm reduction efforts while ensuring a kind of brand portability at a time when brand marketing is stifled by the World Health Organization (WHO) with plain packaging.

The danger posed is less but can be highly addictive. HNB cigarettes are essentially tobacco sticks, infused with a blend whose composition still produces something between smoke and vapor when heated by an electrical element. The absence of combustion, the mechanism by which most harmful compounds are produced, places HNB cigarettes in the Next Generation Products (NGP) category with a lower risk profile compared to secular and traditional cigarettes.

Like electronic cigarettes, HNB cigarettes are promoted by their manufacturers as a much safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes. Research and development teams claim that HNB products provide the throat hit sought by smokers when quitting and deliver nicotine as quickly as conventional cigarettes.

There are several fundamental reasons behind the emergence of these various 'alternative tobacco products'. The most fundamental issue is health, where conventional cigarettes are considered unhealthy, carry the risk of causing various diseases (such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and others), and have the potential to cause premature death. Because they are considered unhealthy, cigarettes have been criticized from various quarters. Governments, 'health regimes' (e.g., the pharmaceutical industry and medical professionals), public policy makers, and anti-smoking groups have all criticized cigarettes. In fact, several tobacco industries, such as PMI and HM Sampoerna, also issue warnings about the health risks of cigarettes. It was later discovered that what makes conventional cigarettes unhealthy is their production of a chemical called tar. Tar contains harmful carcinogenic substances produced through the combustion of tobacco. This tar has the potential to cause various diseases, especially cancer (carcinogen). This is where the urgency of non-combustible tobacco products like HNB lies.
