The formation of this new business unit is also related to the business of its competitor, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk, which recently launched its electric cigarette product called IQOS.

Heru Budiman, Director of Gudang Garam, stated that the company has established three new subsidiaries to run the e-cigarette business. However, currently, the process is limited to the creation of company deeds as they are still monitoring the development of the domestic e-cigarette industry.

"We have prepared from the beginning by establishing a limited liability company to enter the e-cigarette market," said Heru Budiman.

According to Heru, the e-cigarette business in Indonesia has the potential to continue growing and open up many new business competitions within the e-cigarette industry itself. However, Gudang Garam still does not consider the e-cigarette industry a threat and continues to monitor the market developments of e-cigarettes.

"We will continue to monitor the market. But for now, we do not plan to enter that market," he explained.

For your information, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk itself has obtained a business license to market its electric tobacco product named IQOS from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the IQOS product is currently still in market testing and has not been officially launched to the public.
