Vapeboss – Based on extensive research conducted in various countries, e-cigarettes have been adopted as an alternative for conventional smokers looking to quit, due to their perceived safer chemical composition compared to regular cigarettes. However, many questions remain regarding the comparison of risks between e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes.
Dr. Vito A. Damay, a cardiologist, discussed this topic on his YouTube channel, DRV Channel. In one of his YouTube videos, he received a question from a netizen who is both a vaper and a chemist.
"Is it true that vape has a lower risk level than cigarettes because it doesn't produce tar, which causes cancer?" the chemist asked.
Given that he is a chemist, he claimed to be aware of the ingredients in vape products. According to him, the ingredients in vape are food-grade standardized (safe for consumption). However, he advised non-smokers not to use it because vape still contains nicotine.
Dr. Vito replied that there was some truth to the chemist's statement. E-cigarettes or vapes are considered safer than conventional cigarettes because vapes reduce the harmful and toxic substances found in cigarettes. Dr. Vito also added that vape is not entirely safe because, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health website, 'nicotine-free e-liquid is generally considered safe. However, the impact of flavor-enhancing chemicals, especially on immune cells, has not been extensively studied.'
Next, a netizen asked about the severity of the impact of cigarettes on active or passive smokers.
"Do passive smokers experience more dangerous effects than active smokers?" the netizen asked.
Dr. Vito's answer was, of course, active smokers. However, exposure to cigarette smoke can increase the risk for passive smokers, especially women and children. These two groups have a 40% higher risk of heart disease and death from exposure to cigarette smoke compared to women and children who do not inhale it at all.
Based on Dr. Vito's explanation, the conclusion that can be drawn is that e-cigarettes or vapes have a lower risk than cigarettes. However, their use is not recommended for someone who does not smoke or has never smoked.
