Smokers in the Kirklees area of West Yorkshire can now seek support from the Kirklees Wellness Service to help them quit smoking, by being given a free vape starter kit.

Kirklees Council and the charity Yorkshire Cancer Research have teamed up for this initiative, while the devices are offered as part of the Kirklees Wellness Service. Councillor Musarrat Khan, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said she was delighted with the launch of the scheme.

“As a council, we are committed to tackling health inequalities and the offer of vaping devices from Yorkshire Cancer Research will help residents who want to quit smoking live healthier lives and have a positive impact on their families and friends.”

Meanwhile, Dr Stuart Griffiths, director of research, services and policy at Yorkshire Cancer Research, reiterated the benefits of the devices as a quitting aid. “Yorkshire has some of the highest smoking rates in England, and this causes thousands of smoking-related cancers and unnecessary deaths in our region each year. When it comes to helping people quit for good, being able to offer vaping products is crucial. They are a highly effective aid in helping people stop smoking.”

“We are delighted to be working with Kirklees Council to help bring this important option to people who are desperate to quit but need access to the best support. It is essential that stop smoking services across Yorkshire strive to provide this valuable assistance to their clients,” Griffiths added.

Easing the Financial Burden of Purchasing Tobacco Cigarettes

Similarly, earlier this year, another study looked at the feasibility of distributing e-cigarettes to smokers attending homeless centers in the UK, with the aim of improving their health and easing the financial burden of buying cigarettes.

As part of a previous trial, four homeless centers in the UK were allocated to either the Usual Care (UC) or E-Cigarette (EC) group. 32 participants in the UC group received stop smoking advice and were offered support by their local Stop Smoking Service. 48 participants in the EC group were given a vape starter kit with a 4-week supply of e-liquid.

Compiled results showed that in both groups, depression and anxiety scores decreased during the study. However, the group that received the vape starter kit showed more success in quitting smoking. “The EC intervention was well received with minimal negative effects and very few unintended consequences (e.g. lost, stolen, adding illicit substances),” the researchers reported.
