Adult smokers in Indonesia are considered to have the right to receive information about alternative tobacco products that have lower risks. For the sake of improving public health quality, the government is requested to ensure the right of adult smokers to consume alternative tobacco products.

This topic was discussed at the Global Forum on Nicotine (GFN) 2022, which carried the theme "Safer Nicotine: Human Rights and Legal Challenges."

Ariyo Bimmo, as the Chairman of the Indonesian Tar-Free Coalition (KABAR), who attended the online forum, stated that adult smokers have the right to choose alternative products that are safer and have lower health risks.

“So, adult smokers have the right to accurate access and information on alternative tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and nicotine pouches, which have lower risks than cigarettes,” Bimmo said.

According to Bimmo, by using alternative tobacco products, adult smokers who find it difficult to quit can be helped.

Previously, Tomas O'Gorman, one of the speakers at the GFN 2022 forum, conveyed the same thing. He said that adult smokers have the right to choose to switch to lower-risk nicotine delivery products compared to conventional cigarettes.

“To realize the right of adult smokers to use alternative tobacco products, they need to receive accurate and comprehensive information about alternative tobacco products. This is because, currently, there is still a lot of misinformation circulating about these products,” said Tomas, who is also a board member of the International Network of Nicotine Consumer and founder of Pro-Vapeo Mexico.

Some time ago, Johan Sumantri, as the Chairman of the Indonesian Vaper Alliance (AVI), stated that the government lacked interest in socializing the existence and facts of alternative tobacco products to the public. This potentially makes it difficult for adult smokers who want to quit and switch to safer products.

Johan also suggested that the government conduct an open study of alternative tobacco products, so that the government can get an overview of the benefits and facts of these products.
