Important news for vapers! The government has finally approved regulations concerning vape in Indonesia, which have been announced since 2024.
Quoting a statement from Aji Muhawarman, Head of the Communication and Public Services Bureau of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, on Friday (April 17, 2026), he said, "The regulation of electronic cigarettes in Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024 includes age restrictions, advertising control, and product content standards."
He further explained that the implementation of these vape regulations is planned to officially commence in July 2026. So, the regulations not only cover the minimum age limit of 21+ but also include several other derivative rules.
Why 21 Years Old for Vaping Age Limit?
While a few years ago, the legal age for vaping was 18+, now it's different. Since the enactment of Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024, the legal age for vaping has officially increased to 21 years. This regulation is a firm effort by the government to protect children and adolescents from exposure to nicotine-containing products.
Therefore, don't be surprised if buying vapes at vape stores is now becoming stricter. Buyers will be asked to show identification in the form of a KTP (ID card) for verification to ensure they are genuinely 21 years old.
This rule was not made without reason. In fact, the brains of adolescents under 21 are still actively developing. If exposed to nicotine early, it can significantly affect brain function in terms of concentration and memory.
Additionally, adolescents are much more susceptible to nicotine addiction than adults. So, it is reasonable that this regulation is very important to implement to prevent long-term adverse health effects on them.
Vape Regulation is the Same as Conventional Cigarettes
In this new regulation, it turns out that not only the vaping age limit is discussed. There are several derivative rules that make vape regulation now exactly the same as conventional cigarettes. Here are some key points:
-
Strict purchase age limit, mandatory 21+.
-
Prohibition of vape ads on media or platforms easily accessible to children under 21.
-
Restriction of promotional content highlighting trendy lifestyles or appealing to adolescents.
-
Mandatory display of health warnings on all promotional materials.

Is Vaping Effective for Quitting Smoking?
Regarding effectiveness, the answer is still very effective. For adult smokers who are struggling to quit burning tobacco, vaping remains one of the best alternatives to gradually quit smoking.
However, with the enactment of this mandatory 21+ age rule, we are all required to be wiser. Not only for us as buyers or vapers, but also for all vape industry players.
Let's all comply with the rules. The initial intention was to provide a solution for adult smokers, so let's not deviate or provide access to underage children.
One more thing that is most important and must be remembered: if you didn't smoke before, it's better not to try vaping!
No matter how good it tastes, vape liquid contains nicotine, which is addictive and habit-forming. Once you try it, it will be very difficult to quit. The bottom line is, make vaping a pure solution for adult smokers, not just a tool for showing off.
