Johan Sumantri, as the Chairman of the Indonesian Vapers Alliance (AVI), wants the government to create comprehensive domestic vape regulations, for both open and closed systems. The reason is that comprehensive regulations will further advance related industries.
“Our hope is that closed system vapes can continue to develop and become an entry point for smokers who want to switch to potentially lower-risk products,” said Johan.
According to Johan, comprehensive regulations are not limited to maximizing production but also creating a more orderly and structured ecosystem. Especially in terms of investment and capital injection, which can boost the domestic economic cycle.
Thus, e-cigarette products in both open system and closed system categories can grow simultaneously. This will allow the alternative tobacco industry to develop optimally.
“Both open and closed systems have their own segmentation and can continue to run in parallel,” he said.
Upods CEO, Aryo Andrianto, also spoke about this issue. He explained that government revenue from closed-system vape production has high potential. This is based on Aryo's data showing that the market share of closed-system vapes has rapidly increased from under USD 5 billion in 2017 to USD 8 billion in the global market in 2021.
According to Aryo, the increasing trend of closed-system vape use will potentially boost larger exports. From this, it can certainly encourage investment absorption, labor, and the use of local raw materials in the production process.
“We hope that closed-system vapes can drive the domestic vape industry forward, while still coexisting with MSMEs in Indonesia to maintain the stability of this industry,” he concluded.
