Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you're always healthy, your sustenance is abundant, and all your activities are made easy!!
On this occasion, we will discuss something unusual, because what we will discuss in this article is: does vaping break your fast?
As we all know, this year's Ramadan 1442 H is expected to fall in mid-April 2021. During Ramadan, Muslims are, of course, obligated to fast for a full month.
Fasting is abstaining from desires, including eating and drinking, from sunrise (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). So, what happens if we vape while fasting? Does it break the fast? Because our vaping activity is considered similar to smoking, which essentially means putting an object (smoke and vapor) into our bodies. It was once rumored that smoking during fasting is makruh (permissible but not recommended), but the majority of scholars believe that smoking breaks the fast. Regarding this, Muh. Nashiruddin, a lecturer at IAIN Surakarta, provided an explanation. He conveyed this through a video on the Tribunnews.com YouTube channel, TANYA USTAZ.
According to the scholars, smoking and vaping are the same as eating and drinking, so they still break the fast because an object is intentionally introduced into the body. In Arabic, smoking or vaping is called Syurbud Dukhan, which literally means drinking or inhaling smoke. Because the customary name for smoking is As-Syurbu and the visible act is inhaling, the majority of scholars have determined that it breaks the fast.
One scholar mentioned the ruling on smoking during fasting. This scholar from Kediri is Shaykh Ihsan Jampes, who compiled a book titled Irsyadul Ikhwan fi Bayanil Qahwah wad Dukhan (The Book of Coffee and Smoke). In this book, the scholar states that cigarette smoke is considered to break the fast. Essentially, because smoking involves an element of intention and means inhaling, smoking falls into the category of things that break the fast.
But there's still one more question: what about people who are exposed to the vapor or smoke? The answer from the majority of scholars is that because these people are only incidentally affected, without any element of intention, it does not break their fast.
So, in essence, vaping can break the fast. Because our vaping activity is intentional and involves inhaling vapor from a liquid substance, it is the same as introducing that object into our bodies, just like drinking something. Therefore, if you want to vape during the fasting month, it is recommended to do so after breaking the fast or during suhoor.
