PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has established a set of rules that passengers must obey for their safety, security, and convenience. Among these many rules, one covers vaping and smoking.
According to PT KAI's website, safety and comfort are paramount for the public transportation service. Prohibitions against smoking and vaping are clearly displayed at stations and inside train carriages.
"When riding a train, there are many sticker warnings for the safety of its customers, including smoking bans, warnings against sleeping on the cabin floor/train gangway, and warnings about getting caught in the doors," said PT KAI.
So, why isn't there a special smoking area in train carriages?
According to a tweet from the official Kereta Api Indonesia Twitter account @KAI121, they stated that KAI is committed to facilitating passenger travel without cigarette smoke. This commitment is also based on Circular Letter of the Minister of Transportation number 29 of 2014 regarding the prohibition of smoking in public transportation.
That is why there are no smoking rooms in train carriages.
"This commitment is in line with the Circular Letter of the Minister of Transportation number 29 of 2014 regarding the prohibition of smoking in public transportation, so we do not provide special smoking rooms on trains. Thanks," said PT KAI.
The circular is intended for public transportation on land, air, ferry, and rail. The content of the circular also mandates the installation of 'No Smoking' stickers or labels at several points of transportation equipment.
"Do not provide a place for smoking inside the transportation vehicle; transportation crew on duty must not smoke inside the vehicle, and if found smoking inside the vehicle while on duty, strict sanctions should be imposed; transportation crew should increase supervision of every passenger and those who violate should be given strict sanctions," stated the circular signed by Minister of Transportation Ignasius Johan.
