Hello Bigboss!! How are you today? Hope you are always healthy, blessed with good fortune, and all your activities are made easy!
Dr. Suresh Goyal, a senior consultant in pulmonary medicine at Ivy Hospital, stated that in India, over 10 million people die annually due to tobacco. In an online awareness session, he mentioned various conditions promoted by smoking, including various cancers, such as oral, lung, esophageal, kidney, and pancreatic. He also mentioned other conditions like heart and lung problems, as well as aesthetic issues.
“It causes various types of cancer, such as oral, lung, esophageal, kidney, and pancreatic cancers, etc. It causes heart disease, stroke, lung diseases (asthma and COPD), and various eye problems. There is an increased risk of gum disease, stained teeth, and tooth loss. It also lowers the immune system and leads to an increased incidence of pneumonia. Smoking increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, diminishes the senses of smell and taste, causes bad breath, and premature skin aging,” he said.
Regarding skin issues and other appearance concerns, Dr. Goyal explained how quitting smoking improves blood flow to one's skin, thereby increasing the amount of oxygen and nutrients reaching the area. “This directly gives you healthier skin and improves your appearance. Smoking increases anxiety and tension. Quitting smoking can lower blood pressure, heart rate, reduce shortness of breath, and lower the risk of cancer.”
Vaping products prohibited
Unfortunately, legislation prohibiting vaping products, the most effective smoking cessation tool to date, was passed in January 2020. The latter officially banned the production, trade, transportation, storage, and advertising of electronic cigarettes across India. Consequently, offenders now face imprisonment of up to one year, or a fine of up to one lakh rupees, or both for first-time offenders, and imprisonment of up to three years, along with a fine of up to five lakh rupees, for each subsequent offense.
Data from India after the ban consistently shows that since the measure came into effect, people can still purchase vaping products from paan (local tobacco) shops or online. The only difference is that official, high-quality brands are no longer available, leading young vapers to turn to cheap, low-quality versions.
Furthermore, and aptly highlighted in recent BT articles, as with any prohibition, the market always finds a way. Data from any country that enacts such bans invariably indicates that such drastic measures only lead to a "thriving black or underground market for all substances prohibited by the government and are no different for e-cigarettes."
In the past, the government raised excise taxes on tobacco, increasing cigarette prices in an attempt to curb the habit. However, this policy drew criticism for increasing costs for low-income households where smoking is more prevalent.
