Amaliya, an academic from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), explained the heating system applied to alternative tobacco products (ATPs) and claimed that the vapor produced does not contain harmful substances like TAR when used by consumers.

She believes that the application of a heating system in ATPs like e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products can reduce exposure to harmful substances for users, unlike conventional cigarette products.

"Scientific studies from both Indonesia and abroad have revealed that heating systems can reduce risks," said Amaliya.

Based on three studies conducted abroad, including research by Konstantinos Farsalinos from the University of Patras, Greece, Ricardo Polosa from the University of Catania, Italy, and Peter Hajik from the UK, Amaliya concluded that ATPs can suppress harmful substances by 75 to 90 percent.

"The risk of exposure to harmful substances also decreases due to the content of carcinogens," Amaliya said.

The success of ATPs in reducing harmful substances by up to 90 percent is the reason why smokers who switch to alternative tobacco products can show improved lung function and blood vessels.

"Research in Indonesia is still limited, but a systematic review with high evidence validity conducted by the Center for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Services at Universitas Padjadjaran shows good safety and effectiveness for smoking cessation programs," she explained.

Amaliya also hopes that these alternative tobacco products can be maximized by the government and contribute to reducing the prevalence of smoking. However, further research is needed to achieve more optimal results.

"Looking at the available scientific evidence, we can trust that these products are indeed low-risk; it's just that we need to analyze and study this scientific evidence extensively with a neutral mind," she concluded.
